How Gross is the Bathroom?

In short, very much. Just google it and see. Several studies have shown that there are dangerous germs and bacteria in the bathroom that can cause a variety of health problems, which is why deep-cleaning your bathroom every once in a while is a must.

But, how does one deep-clean a bathroom? Where do you start? The tiles? Grout? Shower? Do you use an expensive cleaner or a cheap one? Well, it’s not about where you start – it’s more about the details.

Start with the Shower

Your bathtub or shower should be a priority. Now, many will say why clean it when water runs through it every day? Well, that’s the problem – water stains. Water stains can ruin the glossy look of your shower head and don’t let us get started on soap scum. If you want to deep clean your bathroom, start with the shower.

To clean soap scum from the shower head, pour vinegar into a plastic bag and submerge the nozzle. Tie the bag up nicely and leave it overnight. In the morning, all you have to do is rinse the shower head. The scum will disappear instantly and it’ll be as shiny as the day you bought it.

To clean your bathtub, buy a quality tub cleaner and follow the instructions – it’s that simple.

Tiles, Walls, and Ceiling

Next up are the tiles. No one really thinks about cleaning the bathroom tiles often. However, if you’re planning on making your bathroom spotless, cleaning the tiles, walls, and the ceiling is a must. Who said that house cleaning is a simple job? It’s not, but the end result is awesome.

However, there’s a simple trick to do it. Buy a tub cleaner (just get what you want, there’s no such thing as best bathtub cleaner) or an all-purpose cleaner first. Spray the tiles all over your bathroom and turn the shower on at the highest heat setting. Let it build steam up, which should take no more than 5 minutes, then close the bathroom door and let the steam do its dance with the cleaner.

After 20 minutes, stop the water and use a microfiber mop to clean the tiles. You’ll be left with shiny tiles which will make all the difference in your bathroom.

Toilet

Ah, the toilet. No one really wants to clean it, but it must be done if you want your bathroom to be really clean. There is a simple way to do it. Pour baking soda in your toilet and leave it to work for 5-10 minutes. Take a sponge or damp pumice stone and rub away – it should clean the mineral deposit stains and limescale.

Now, take a toilet brush and scrub the spaces between the seat and basin nicely, then pour bleach all over it. After a few minutes, clean off with hot soapy water. If you have one at home, a light electric pressure washer will do the job perfectly as well.

Bathroom Sink

Before cleaning the bowl, pour vinegar and baking soda down the drain. Flush with hot water in a few minutes to clean the sink and eliminate any bad smells. Disinfecting wipes will work great for the faucet. Flossing it (we’re not kidding!) will remove any water stains from those hard-to-reach spots and keep the faucet perfectly clean.

Bathroom Vent

No one really pays any attention to the bathroom vent, but it’s just as important for cleaning as everything else. That’s because bacteria love it, and every time you turn it on you’re spreading them across your bathroom.

To clean the vent, vacuum it first to get the gunk off, then wipe it down with a damp cloth. If you know how to get the plastic cover off, take it off and wash it well. This will also give you space to clean the vent motor and blades.
